A river cuts through rock, not because of it's power, but because of its persistence.

The Two WORST Things That EVERYONE Uses WRONG.

Inspiration and Motivation.

We’ve all fallen victim to this sneaky fucking duo.

Our social media feeds are saturated with motivational quotes and “really important” phrases that are supposed to add some deeper meaning to whatever mindless crap that we vomit onto our keyboards and into our screens.

Don’t get me wrong, some of these quotes are pretty badass and deserve their recognition, but I think that being constantly bombarded with inspiration and motivation is actually doing a disservice to the viewer.

I call these, “feel good cookies.”

When someone’s fat, and they know that they’re fat, the last thing they want is something reminding them that they’re fat. But you know what never fails to make a fat person happy? Even just for a few seconds?

Fucking cookies bro.

The higher quality the cookie, the better the satisfaction. Right? Right.

The point that I’m trying to make here is that there is no cookie in the world, no matter how decadent or delicious, could ever take the fat off that person’s body.

As with all other emotions, being inspired or motivated is a state that comes and goes. To rely on such fickle notions is unsustainable and foolish.

If you were to eat a cookie with the notion that because you ate that cookie you’re going to hit it 10x harder in the gym tonight, then the reason why you’re working so hard in the gym that night isn’t because of discipline or the fact that you “work hard just to work hard.”

It’s because you ate a fucking cookie.

Motivation and inspiration aren’t healthy when sought from outside sources. They are only healthy when you’re able to cultivate them within yourself through organic means.

But how do you do that?

You take action.

At the very least, you make an effort to put yourself in a situation where taking action is possible. Having taken action, you’ll see that motivation and inspiration are nothing more than by-products of that action.

  • I decided to start writing again.
  • I began writing this post without any idea what it was going to be about.
  • I started writing about my frustrations about motivation and inspiration.

Halfway through, I was motivated and inspired to get this weird intangible idea out of my head, and now I’m 400 words deep into a thought that I truly thought was a single phrase kind of notion.

On the macro scale, I think that through taking constant and consistent action, you build a certain sense of motivational momentum, where what you do becomes more or less effortless.

I don’t know, we’ll see.

This is only my second post for fuck’s sake.
